Georgia Tech opened the college football season with an upset win over 10th-ranked Florida State.

College football is back with a vengeance.

Georgia Tech kicker Aidan Bear hit a crucial field goal in overtime to give the Yellow Jackets a 24-21 upset of the 10th-seeded Florida State Seminoles in the Aer Lingus College Football Championship in Dublin, Ireland, Saturday.

Florida State quarterback DJ Uigalele led a 15-play, 84-yard drive, including two conversions on the fourth attempt, to tie the score at 21-21. It was the last time Florida State had the ball.

Yellow Jackets center Hines King wasted 6:33 of game time over 12 plays, giving his shooter a chance to win it.

Bear missed a chance from 52 yards out on the first possession of the second half, but scored the winner from 41 yards out, hitting the ball inside the left post.

Florida State came out strong, moving the ball easily on their first drive. Lawrence Tovele scored the first touchdown of the 2024 season from 28 yards out. The Seminoles executed a trick play on the extra point to secure the two-point conversion, giving them an 8-0 lead.

The Yellow Jackets responded with a quick goal of their own. Backup quarterback Zach Byron replaced King with a charge to the opposing team’s one-yard line and raced into the end zone for a touchdown on a pass from the quarterback.

King was consistent all day for the Yellow Jackets, doing it with both hands and feet. He finished the day with 11 of 16 catches for 146 yards while running the ball 15 times for 54 yards.

Georgia Tech running back Jamal Haynes ran the ball 11 times for 75 yards and scored two touchdowns in the win.

This was FSU’s first loss as a wide favorite since 2021.

This marks the Seminoles’ second straight loss after they were crushed by the Georgia Bulldogs 63-3 in the Orange Bowl after failing to qualify for the College Football Playoffs despite their 13-0 record at the time.

The Seminoles will look to right their ways in their home game against Boston College on Sept. 2.

Georgia Tech looks to build on its upset win at home against the Georgia State Panthers on Aug. 31.
