An NBC executive didn’t want Friends’ Monica Geller, played by Courteney Cox, 60, to have sex after the first date. The executive felt it would make Monica unsympathetic, creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman recall.

“We thought it made her sympathetic.”

In the first episode of the series, Monica goes on a date with Paul, the “wine man”, with whom she has sex afterwards. David told the British newspaper: “The man in charge said: ‘We wouldn’t like Monica if she slept with a man on the first date. We thought that would make her likable.'” Times.

To see if this was true, a short poll was conducted among the audience. It asked what people would think if Monica had sex. “It was very twisted,” David recalls. “The question was, ‘If Monica sleeps with a man on her first date, is she a) a slut or b) a whore?’”

The audience overwhelmingly chose a third option: the viewer thought it was fine for Monica to go to bed with someone after a date.
