Life-threatening conditions due to record rainfall in Vienna

Fire engine in flooded street

Heavy rain has caused problems in the Austrian capital Vienna. In parts of Vienna, 112 mm of rain fell in a short period, a record for a summer month. The city usually only gets about 200 mm during the entire summer.

The dumps flooded streets and tunnels. A woman waiting at a bus stop fell and was carried by the waters, landing under a parked bus. She couldn’t get out. Emergency services hijacked the bus and freed it. The woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

People also faced problems elsewhere. Many motorists were swept away by the rapidly rising waters and had to get out of their cars through open windows. Austrian media also spoke to people who got out of their basements in time.

The Vienna fire brigade was called more than 450 times, according to ORF. The uneven distribution across the city was striking: While some districts received more rain in an hour than they would normally receive in a month, other parts remained virtually dry.
