“European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager will not continue in this role” – IT Pro – News

Margrethe Vestager will not be seeking a third term as European Competition Commissioner. Denmark wants to nominate someone else for the job, according to the Financial Times. Vestager has become known for her plans to regulate big tech companies.

Denmark wants to give someone other than Vestager the post of European Competition Commissioner. Government officials told the Financial Times:. This is mainly due to the loss of the Social Liberal Party, which lost heavily in the Danish elections in 2022 and has not been a member of the government since then. Denmark seems to want to nominate someone from the Social Democrats for the post, but European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has not yet assembled her entire committee. It is therefore also possible that someone else will take on the role of Market Commissioner. The Financial Times mentions Dutchman Wopke Hoekstra and Belgian Didier Reynders, but also Frenchman Thierry Breton, who is currently the European Commissioner for Digital Affairs.

In her role, Margrethe Vestager has focused on all forms of competition and market forces, but has been in the news mainly for her stance and actions towards big tech companies. For example, she fined Qualcomm €1 billion for abuse of power, and Google €1.49 billion for abuse of power in AdSense. She has also opened several investigations into abuse of competitive position by Google, Apple, Meta, and most recently Microsoft’s investment in OpenAI.
