Dillon was stripped of his eligibility for the playoffs after his win over Richmond.

Austin Dillon was stripped of his eligibility for the NASCAR Cup Playoffs that followed his win at Richmond Raceway.

NASCAR announced the penalty Wednesday after reviewing the end of Sunday night’s race in which Dillon collided with Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin. Dillon spun out of Logano’s path in Turn 3 on the final lap of overtime at the Cook Out 400 and hit Hamlin in Turn 4. He was 32nd in the championship standings heading into the weekend.

Dillon’s team held on to the win, although it did not count toward the postseason. The No. 3 Richard Childress Racing team was also docked 25 points in the drivers’ and owners’ championships due to the incident.

Richard Childress Racing also lost eligibility for the Owner’s Championship due to the penalty.

Additionally, Dillon’s handler, Brandon Benesch, was suspended for the next three races. Benesch instructed Dillon to “destroy him” when Hamlin came up the inside of him in the final turn.

NASCAR also fined Joey Logano for his actions after the race. A frustrated Logano ran out to the pits and choked himself near NASCAR officials and team members, including Dillon’s crew members who were on their way to the front of the grid to celebrate with the winning driver.
