Sonos Delays Two New Products ‘To Focus On App Improvement’ – Picture & Sound – News

Sonos has delayed two new products. The company says it needs to focus on fixing bugs in the Sonos app. That app was released in May but was quickly criticized for bugs and missing functionality. The delayed products were originally supposed to be released this year.

“The app situation is now a headwind to current product sales, so we believe we should now focus on improving this app.” CEO Patrick Spence says, according to SeekingAlpha, Explaining the quarterly numbers, he said the focus on the app meant Sonos would have to delay “two major new product announcements.” Those products were originally scheduled to be released in the fourth quarter of this year.

It’s not clear when the products will be released now. Spence also doesn’t indicate what kind of products are involved. That’s presumably going to include the speaker that was pictured last month, using technology from a Dutch startup. Spence says the “app experience” must first meet the company’s and customers’ expectations.

Sonos released the updated app in May. It lacked some features that the previous version had, such as queues, alarm clocks, and support for local music libraries. Spence apologized for the app in late July. In addition to the missing features, Spence says the app has “persistent” bugs that weren’t discovered during testing. These bugs are said to be primarily found in older products, and include, for example, the inability to control speakers via the app. Spence also notes latency issues or error messages.

Despite app woes, Sonos revenue rose in Q4 Higher than the previous yearSales rose 6.4 percent to $397.1 million. Net profit was $3.7 million, up $27.3 million from a year earlier. According to Sonos, the increase was due to Ace speakers sold since June.
