Hennie Huisman and Jack d’Ancona had known each other for about 40 years, and d’Ancona died suddenly on Friday at the age of 86. “I’m very shocked, I’m really upset,” his friend and colleague Hennie Huisman told the Afghan National Police. “I think it’s a very cold idea.”

Huisman and d’Ancona, both 73, became known together through the Soundmixshow. Huisman hosted it, and d’Ancona was always the chief critic. But he was much more than that, says Huisman. “He was very thoughtful. He would cut out parts of newspaper articles that had my name on them and send them to me. He always did that.”

Dancona had heart failure, something Huisman and almost no one else knew about. “Malley Dancona kept moving and didn’t want to know about illnesses or injuries, and he always wanted to look healthy,” Huisman says. The two spoke by phone a few days ago. “We were just real friends. He was at births and weddings, he was always there.”

In addition to the attention, D’Ancona was also very vain and they would laugh together, the broadcaster says. “He would always take three or four different jackets with him to the recordings. Then he would look at what looked best and ask, ‘What are you wearing tonight? I’ve been wearing my jacket all day.'” D’Ancona “really knew his stuff,” Huisman adds. “I would talk a little bit, but he wouldn’t. It’s a loss, a really empty feeling.”
