The United States crashed out of the Copa America soccer series in the group stage after losing 1-0 to Uruguay. The United States finished third in the group.

Matias Oliveira scored the only goal of the evening in Kansas City midway through the second half. A Napoli defender tapped in from close range after American goalkeeper Matt Turner headed it.

For the Americans, Ricardo Pepi came on just before halftime and Malik Tillman came on in the final minutes. But they also failed to make a difference. In the second half, several offensive changes by Nationals coach Greg Berhalter did not have the desired effect. Tillman had a shot in the last minute, but it was blocked, and the game was then over.

The moments between Christian Pulisic and referee Kevin Ortega were striking during and after the match. Pulisic expressed frustration several times during the match, but Ortega seemed unwilling to shake Pulisic’s hand after the match.

Uruguay won all the group matches. It was the first time since 1959 that the group had not dropped points. Panama finished second in the group.

Uruguay will play in the last 8 against the No. 2 in Group D, which includes Brazil and Colombia. These countries will meet at night from Tuesday to Wednesday. Brazil team has 4 points from 2 games, Colombia already has 6 points.
