Van Gogh spent three months in Drenthe in September 1883 and created several works during that period. According to the museum, it was inspired by landscapes.

Van Gogh probably painted the purchased work in a small hut or in an open field. “He paints damp, desolate landscapes in vibrant rust colors and hues of purple,” the museum wrote. According to the museum, the palette is a precursor to the color work for which Van Gogh later became famous.

Museum director Harry Toppin is thrilled with the purchase. “It is a story of development in which the landscape of Drenthe is the most important catalyst,” says the director. According to chief curator, Annemeke Rehns, the watercolor goes against the idea that Drenthe was dark and of little importance at the time. “It shows that this is a time full of inspiration, color and promise.”
