She didn’t know where or how to start, but what she did know was how she wanted it to be. “I wanted a warm, bohemian atmosphere with lots of wood tones, so it flows beautifully from indoors to outdoors.”
She also has her desires in order regarding farming. It wants plenty of green space with enough winter perennials, so it stays covered all year and doesn’t go bare.
Mediterranean garden with several seating areas
To extend the warm, bohemian atmosphere from the inside out, Tom created a beautiful porch on the side of the house. Working with two different tiles creates a beautiful contrast. The tiles with delicate floral patterns make it look as if there is a cozy rug.
At the back of the garden, a second seating area has been created opposite the shed with a beautiful and elegant wooden deck. Here Ingrid can relax in the morning or evening sun.
Half paving was chosen between the terraces and at the entrance at the back of the garden, so that excess rainwater can drain easily (unlike slab paving). The light beige “castle pebbles” are very fine and have a slightly sandy texture, which of course contributes to the Mediterranean atmosphere that makes Ingrid so happy. Nice bonus: the gravel has no sharp corners, so you can walk on it with your bare feet!
Curvy fences are given a beautiful natural look because they are covered with fencing elements made of woven willow wicker.
The borders along the edges of the garden are designed with beautiful organic shapes. This provides an additional playful contrast to the sleek surface and straight lines of the balcony. The edges of the border are slightly raised with steel strips that are easy to install in circular shapes. In the borders, several groups of chestnut posts of different thicknesses and lengths have been placed in the ground, giving the garden an extra natural touch.
Tom has planted some beautiful climbers against some of these posts, including honeysuckle (Lonicera henryi). This climbing plant grows profusely with many branches and wonderfully scented flowers. Therefore, in a period of time the pillar building and part of the fence will be covered in beautiful and colorful green color.
Furthermore, the borders are filled with lots of greenery, including Fatsia japonica, also known as the finger plant. It is still low at the moment, but soon it could reach three to four meters in height. Several mahogany (Mahonia eurybracteata) bushes have also been planted together, which will soon grow to a height of about one meter. The extra nice thing about these shrubs is that they bloom in winter with fresh yellow flowers, so the garden has color all year round.
The ultimate holiday atmosphere
Since Ingrid wanted a bohemian holiday vibe in her garden, Tom went all out with the planting. For example, he planted two beautiful Chinese palm trees. These originally come from the Himalayas, so they can withstand cold and wind well. In other words: very suitable for our climate!
