OnePlus has officially announced the OnePlus 12 series for the Dutch and Belgian markets. The OnePlus 12 is the most expensive model that will cost at least €949; The cheaper 12R appears in stores at 699 euros.
As previously announced when the OnePlus 12 was released in China, the device has the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, Qualcomm’s latest high-end SoC. OnePlus says it has installed a cooling system with two vapor chambers to keep the chip cool. The device uses lpddr5x RAM and UFS 4.0 storage, where the 128GB variants of the OnePlus 11 are equipped with the slower UFS 3.1.
The 6.82-inch OLED display with a resolution of 3168 x 1440 pixels is covered with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and, according to previous reports, comes from Chinese display supplier BOE. It still has curved side edges, which Samsung abandoned this year with its Galaxy S24 Ultra phone. For OnePlus, the display reaches up to 1600cd/m² in High Brightness mode, but can go up to 4500cd/m². The refresh rate can vary from 1 to 120 Hz thanks to the use of LTPO technology. The device makes frame interpolation possible, so every game can run at 120Hz, according to OnePlus.
The design of the OnePlus 12 is similar to that of the OnePlus 11, with the same distinctive camera island attached to the aluminum frame on the side. The alert slider has switched sides and is located on the left side. The Gorilla Glass 5 back cover has a black finish with a glossy finish. OnePlus says nothing about an IP rating for waterproofing, which competing models from Samsung, Xiaomi, and Motorola generally have.
With the exception of the 32MP front camera, the OnePlus 12’s camera system is almost identical to the OnePlus Open’s, with a 50MP, 60mm² Sony Lytia LYT-808 sensor for the main camera. The Lytia series sensors feature a stacked architecture, where the pixel transistors and photodiodes sit on top of each other rather than next to each other, as with a traditional image sensor. For the first time, the top non-foldable model of OnePlus has a telephoto camera with a periscope lens, which offers 3x optical zoom compared to the main camera. That doesn’t sound like much, but in our OnePlus Open review, the 64MP telephoto camera proved capable of excellent digital zoom. The 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera contains an auto-focus lens, so the device can focus from a distance of 3.5 cm to capture macro images.
The OnePlus 12’s battery capacity is 5,400 mAh, which is 400 mAh more than the OnePlus 11 and 10 Pro. The device can be charged wired at a maximum of 100W, for which an adapter is still included. Wireless charging is possible at 50W. The OnePlus 11 and Open couldn’t do that, but the OnePlus 10 Pro can.
When the OnePlus 12 appears in stores in the Netherlands and Belgium on February 6, it will be OnePlus’ most expensive “regular” model yet. Only the foldable OnePlus Open since the end of last year has been significantly more expensive. When launched, the suggested retail price was €1,799. The cheapest version of the OnePlus 12 phone, with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, is priced at 949 euros. A more expensive version with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage has a suggested retail price of €1,099. With the OnePlus 11, the entry-level model still costs €829 at introduction. The OnePlus 10 Pro, the top model of 2022, was initially sold for at least 899 euros.
OnePlus 12 R
Perhaps due to the higher price of the top model, OnePlus is also launching the cheaper 12R model in the Netherlands and Belgium. Although OnePlus has been selling R smartphones in India for years, the 12R is the first phone to officially hit stores here. The device is available from February 13 and is priced at €699. OnePlus promises to provide the 12R with three OS upgrades (up to Android 17) and four years of security updates.
In terms of appearance, the OnePlus 12R is similar to the 12, although the round camera island protrudes less and the device is a bit lighter and smaller. The alert slider on this device is also located on the left side of the metal frame. The black version of the back door features a sleek design, and OnePlus is talking about an IP65 rating, which promises splash resistance. The LTPO OLED screen features curved side edges, a diagonal of 6.78 inches, a resolution of 2780 x 1264 pixels, and a refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is for protection. Like the OnePlus 12, the 12R has a 5,500mAh battery that can be charged wired at 100W.
To bring the price down, OnePlus has mainly saved on the SoC and camera system. The OnePlus sub-top doesn’t have extras like a Pixelworks chip, a fast USB 3.2 port, or wireless charging. The 12R is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Qualcomm’s faster SoC from last year, which, like the OnePlus 12, is cooled using two vapor chambers. In Benelux, only a version with 16GB RAM and 256GB UFS4.0 storage will be released. Elsewhere, a variant with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS3.1 storage is also available.
The camera system on the OnePlus 12R looks suspiciously similar to that of the OnePlus Nord 3. This means a main camera with a relatively large Sony IMX890, a 50MP 50mm² sensor behind an optically stabilized f/1.8 lens, but a less special 8MP sensor and an angled camera Ultra wide without autofocus. The third 2-megapixel camera is only used for taking macro photos. Finally, there’s a 16-megapixel front camera, just like the Nord 3.
