This was the most important news on Tuesday, January 2:

• An explosion in Beirut, most likely an Israeli attack, killed Hamas’s second-in-command. Saleh Al-Arouri is also considered the military leader of Hamas in the West Bank. Two other Hamas leaders were killed in the explosion.

• The Lebanese Hezbollah group vowed revenge after the attack that occurred in Beirut. It remains unclear what exactly this retaliation will entail. Hezbollah says it “has its finger on the trigger.”

• Shipping companies will continue to avoid the Red Sea for a while longer. The attacks launched by the Houthi rebels made Hapag-Lloyd and Maersk decide to continue sailing on other routes to Europe and Asia. Shipping company CMA CGM doubles prices.

• Türkiye claims to have arrested dozens of Israeli spies. They may have targeted Hamas members in Türkiye. Like Qatar and Lebanon, Türkiye hosts senior Hamas leaders.

• Israel says it is cooperating in a case before the International Court of Justice in which South Africa accuses Israel of genocide. In this case, Israel believes it can prove that this is not the case.
