New iPhone features coming in early 2024
In 2024, iOS 18, the new operating system for the iPhone, will be introduced. The update brings all kinds of new features to the Apple smartphone. But for this you will need a little patience: iOS 18 will not be announced until June, but will be released in September.
Purchase advice
However, your iPhone will still be up to date before then, because there will be some major updates to iOS 17 in the coming months, and that also includes some new features. We know some of them already: Apple has already announced them or put them in beta, but hasn’t released them yet. An update like iOS 17.3 should soon arrive on the iPhone. But what new iPhone features can we expect to see in spring 2024?
Protection for stolen device
This iOS 17.3 feature makes your iPhone useless to thieves: Stolen Device Protection. If you enable it, your iPhone will have an extra layer of security. This means: If your iPhone is stolen and the thief knows your password, he or she will not be able to access your most important data and functions. You must access using Touch or Face ID, which is not possible if the owner is nowhere to be found.
So stolen device protection is part of iOS 17.3. This is the next major update for the iPhone, and we expect it to be released in January or February. So you can update quickly!
Apple Music: Community playlists
Are you an Apple Music subscriber? You’ll soon be able to create Group Playlists here. These are playlists that you make with friends and family. Each song shows who added it, and you can respond to specific songs with emojis. You can also decide who can access the playlist and you can change the order of the songs.
Popular Playlists was originally intended for iOS 17.2. But when the beta version of this update reached its final stages, the feature suddenly disappeared. It seems like Apple needed more time, because they were suddenly added back in the iOS 17.3 beta. That’s why we expect it this spring.
AirPlay in the hotel room
Using AirPlay with your hotel room TV will soon become easier. Soon, all you have to do is scan a QR code, and the connection will then be established automatically. You can then stream whatever you want – think videos, photos, music, series and more.
The feature was announced as part of iOS 17, so we expect it to appear in the first half of the year, before iOS 18 is announced. We don’t yet know which update it will come with. Moreover, hotel chains and their owners will also have to do their part: they must carry out the function themselves. After release, it will take some time before most hotels support AirPlay.
Side loading
Within the European Union, a law will be in place starting this year requiring Apple to allow side loading. This lets you choose to download apps from outside the App Store. Apple has never allowed this: according to the tech company, it would be unsafe. But from this year onwards they will have to believe it.
Apple has yet to set a specific release date for sideloading, but we do know that the feature will be released this year. According to a well-known Apple analyst Mark Gorman We don’t have to wait much longer. Lateral loading is expected as early as the first half of 2024.
More new iPhone features
As you can see, your iPhone will get quite a few new features in the near future, but 2024 holds even more. This year we expect to see more cars supporting next-generation CarPlay. Other countries, in addition to the United States, may also receive “satellite roadside assistance”: a function that helps in the event of a car breakdown, if you do not have Wi-Fi or an Internet connection.
Apple likely has more innovations up its sleeve, especially for iOS 18. 2024 promises to be a great year!
