While climate does not appear to be an issue in the election, three out of four Dutch people are concerned about climate change. Women are more concerned about its consequences. Men are more concerned about the costs of climate policy.
Adults are more concerned about the consequences of climate change this year than in 2020. This is evidenced by research conducted by the statistical agency CBS among eighteen thousand participants aged eighteen years or over. More than four in five people think it is a good idea for the government to be involved in climate policy.
Surprisingly, 43% of older people are concerned about the consequences of climate change for future generations. This percentage is only 30% among young people between the ages of 18 and 25 years. It also appears that 38% of women are very concerned about the climate, compared to 31% of men.
The costs of climate policy are often the concern of men
In addition to fear of climate consequences, there are also concerns about the spending side of climate policy. 58% of adults indicate that they are concerned about this matter. In 2020, this percentage was still 50 percent.
It is the men who at most have a diploma at VMBO or MBO 1 level who are concerned about costs. People from poorer families are also more concerned about money going to climate policy.
A third of adults believe that it is the turn of major countries such as China and the United States to implement strict climate policies first. Nearly three-quarters of respondents believe big business, industry and aviation are doing little to combat climate change. About half of those surveyed believe that citizens are not doing enough themselves.
