Jordan canceled the summit with US President Biden and others. Biden was scheduled to speak today in the capital, Amman, about the war between Israel and Hamas with the Jordanian King, Egyptian President Sisi, and Palestinian President Abbas.
Abbas was then the first to cancel the meeting with Biden after the attack on the hospital in the Gaza Strip. The entire Amman summit was canceled shortly afterwards.
Biden is ‘angry and very sad’
Before traveling to Jordan, Biden will first speak in Israel with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. This meeting will go ahead. Biden boarded a plane heading to the Middle East around midnight (Dutch time) in Washington.
Around the same time, the White House issued a press release in which Biden said he was “outraged and deeply saddened” by the attack on the hospital in Gaza, in which at least 500 Palestinians were killed.
In the brief press statement, Biden did not make any statements about who the United States believes was behind the attack. However, the president instructed his security team to gather intelligence on exactly what happened.
Optimism about emergency aid
The Palestinian authorities in the Gaza Strip say that Israel attacked the hospital from the air. The Israeli army stated that the intelligence collected showed that the Islamic Jihad movement was behind the attack on the hospital.
White House spokesman John Kirby said that Biden will ask Netanyahu “difficult questions” on issues including the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and civilian casualties. Furthermore, Kirby expressed optimism about emergency aid reaching the Gaza Strip across the border with Egypt.
