Eight European public broadcasters, including the NPO, will collaborate on fantasy series in the coming years. Under the name New8, they will produce eight TV series every year in different formats and share them with each other.
The news was revealed on Tuesday at the MIA audiovisual exhibition in Rome.
Public broadcasters from Sweden (SVT), Norway (NRK), Denmark (DR), Iceland (RÚV), Finland (YLE), Germany (ZDF), Belgium (VRT) and the Netherlands (NPO) are guaranteeing the series’ cooperation. It is widely distributed throughout Europe, without the involvement of streaming services.
NPO Chairman Frederic Levlang describes the collaboration as “great news for fans of high-quality fantasy series across Europe.”
“At a time when competition for European viewers is increasing, this seems like a logical step for us as public broadcasters to take, especially when it comes to the efficient use of public money. We are convinced that it will benefit the quality of European imagination.” says Levlang.
The first series is scheduled to be shown in 2025
Similar cooperation already exists in Scandinavia. According to the NPO, New8 should be seen as an extension of this.
The partners have concluded an agreement for an initial period of three years. The first series will be given the green light in 2023 and will be available for publication in all participating countries from 2025.
