The bosses of The Hague City Council appointed Ari Slope as a scout. The former minister should consider the possibilities of forming a new majority coalition in the short term.
Last week, the alliance collapsed in The Hague after the VVD stopped working with D66, CDA, PvdA and GroenLinks. This happened after a tumultuous and rambunctious meeting of the city council over how the coalition would deal with Hart vor Den Haag, the party of former alderman Richard de Moss.
De Mos was fully exonerated of corruption in April, and now wants to go back to college.
The Hague Council expects Sloop to have a “transparent process, with public reporting to the city council”. Previously, former minister Bruno Bruins was appointed as “debate leader” to try to improve inter-relationships in the city council. He advised the coalition to negotiate with de Moss. VVD, CDA and D66 were willing to do this, but PvdA and GroenLinks were totally against it.
After the tumultuous controversy that followed the Bruins’ advice, the VVD terminated the collaboration and VVD member Anne Mulder and Kavita Parbhudayal tendered their resignations. As a result, the coalition lost its majority.
Sloop has been a member of the House of Representatives for years on behalf of ChristenUnie. From 2017 to 2022, he was Minister of Primary and Secondary Education and Information in the Rutte III government.
