The final event of the PGA Tour season kicks off Thursday with the 2022 tournament set to be decided by 29 of the FedEx Cup’s top 30 players after Will Zalatoris retired after a back injury. The FedEx Cup qualifiers will play their third and final event with an overlapping leaderboard topped by the #1 player on the field, Scotty Scheffler.
Already a four-time winner of the PGA Tour this year, Schaeffler will start at the age of eight without being chased by everyone in East Lake as he attempts to become the first golfer since Justin Thomas in 2017 to win five times on the PGA Tour in one season. With $18 million on the line for first place, the four-day event should be a great race. Schaeffler will be in the top five last week in the BMW Championship, but his company at the helm – Patrick Cantlay, Xander Shaveli, Cameron Smith, Rory McIlroy and others – will be hard-pressed to last more than 72 championship holes.
Scheffler (or Smith) could crown what has been an all-time year so far, but the fight extends to a tough golf course with the world’s best players playing for more money than they’ve ever played in a golf tournament before should be massive. Keep it closed here as CBS Sports will track it all with live updates and analysis throughout the first round of the 2022 Tour Championship on Thursday.
