Sam Houston State will host the 10th annual Dance Gallery Festival’s on Nov. 4 and Nov. 5 from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Gaertner Performing Arts Center Dance Theater.
This festival was created by Astrid von Ussar and Mojia Ussar in 2007 and has become a well-known event with annual showcases in New York City and Huntsville, Texas.
“When I first started the festival it was mostly because I believed there were not enough opportunities for larger work being fully produced,” said Von Ussar.
To celebrate their anniversary, this year’s festival will include a “Best of” program featuring audience favorites from the past 10 years.
There are a wide variety of groups that are performing this year. Some are groups that have participated in the Gallery before while there are also a few groups that are new. The groups participating in the event have come from all over Texas, New York, and even from England and Italy.
Sophomore Beverly Chafoya is planning to go to the festival.
“Dance has always allowed me to express myself in a way that other outlets can’t,” said Chafoya. “I’m actually very excited to see what the Gallery has to offer.”
According to Von Ussar, the aim for this festival is to help deepen the public appreciation and support for concert dance.
The event is open to the public and tickets are $15.
