The Sam Houston State University Department of Art is currently in the midst of the 56 annual Faculty Art Exhibit. The exhibit will run until March 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Gaddis Geeslin Art Gallery in Building F.

Department of Art Chairman Michael Henderson said he is excited to showcase his fellow faculty members in an exhibit that promotes all mediums of art.

“Our faculty is always making art, that’s what they do as artists,” Henderson said. “This is considered their form of research, it’s their creative practice. They’re always doing this, they don’t actually prepare for these shows.”

Because of the ample amount of art professors, only half can be showcased each year.

“We have more professors than we can show at one time so we spilt them in half,” Henderson said. “So every other year every faculty member will be able to showcase their work.”

Additionally Henderson said there is significance in the faculty exhibit as it allows exposure to university artists.

“It’s significant to give the faculty the opportunity to show their work from the past two years and for it to be seen by the students, university staff members and the Huntsville community,” Henderson said.

The exhibit features 11 faculty members in different mediums such as computer animation, three dimensional works, drawings and paintings.

“There are works that are shown on the wall, two dimensional works, an installation of a three dimensional objects and a video by the computer animation faculty,” Henderson said. “In terms of my favorite there are a lot of diverse mediums.”

There are more works done by painters and computer animators, however Henderson said there will be featured photographers in next year’s exhibit.

Although the exhibit is faculty works, SHSU art students have a hand in the installation of the gallery.

“We have student interns that work in the gallery, they handle the installation of the gallery,” Henderson said.

Henderson said it’s important for faculty to demonstrate their work to students and the Huntsville community.

“It’s significant to give the faculty the opportunity to show their work from the past two years and for it to be seen by the students, university staff members and the Huntsville community,” Henderson said.

There will be a panel that is open to the community on March 1. The featured faculty will be asked questions about their works, and it will open to the audience as the discussions conclude.

“We do panel discussions,” Henderson said. “One has already happened at the opening session, and the other will be at the closing session where faculty members will be in the auditorium talking about their works, and will take questions from the audience.”

The 56 Annual Faculty Art Exhibit is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
