As students returned to campus and stepped into the sparkling new Humanities and Social Sciences Building on Monday, they discovered a brand new, up-to-date computer lab awaiting their arrival.
The new CHSSB computer lab offers the newest audio/visual, data and classroom technology. With many new monitors, cable television and better printers, the lab promises to be bigger and better than its previous counterpart in ABI.
“We are very excited about this lab; we were able to squeeze in 103 stations. We have three big, robust printers so hopefully that twenty-page printing limitation can go away,” Kayla Sephenson, Computer Lab Supervisor said. “Also, we have twelve, 47-inch monitors that will have cable displayed on them twenty four hours starting Tuesday.”
The computer monitors in the new lab are 20 inches and are also widescreen; the new lab is the only one on campus that offers widescreen monitors.
This new lab will be replacing the old computer lab previously located in AB1. The AB1 location will become the home of the Computer Services Helpdesk, which is moving from the second floor to allow easier access for students. Currently the old computer lab is being used as temporary space for Computer Services off-campus staff, allowing them to move on-campus for the time being.
“During the past several years, the Computer Services staff members have been located in AB1, and also in AB4, the Telecom building, the old Frels buildings, and SamSouth,” Nancy Sears, Director of UCS-Client Support said. “We will be able to finally all be back under one roof.”
Once all the moves are completed the UCS-Client Support department and Information Resources offices will be on the first floor (of AB1), computing Science will be on the second floor and the third floor will be for the UCS-Systems department and the UCS-Administrative Applications offices, said Sears.
