OLMITO, Texas (AP) – A 21-year-old woman was charged with murder Monday in the death of her newborn daughter whose corpse was found in a suitcase in her bathroom.
Jacqueline Lee Reich of Laguna Vista was charged with one count of murder and one count of injury to a child. She did not enter a plea. Magistrate court Judge Patricia Hernandez set bond at $1 million on the murder charge and $250,000 on the injury to a child charge.
Reich’s stepfather found the baby Friday and took it to the Port Isabel Police Department. Police said the infant was in a plastic bag inside the suitcase and may have been dead from two weeks to a month.
Preliminary autopsy results indicated the baby was carried to almost full term, Sheriff Omar Lucio said. He said a complete autopsy would help determine whether it was born live or was stillborn. He said Reich’s arrest Sunday night was merited by the discovery of a body and “the defendant’s statements.”
“We seem to think that the baby was born alive,” Lucio said. “Whatever happened after that, we’re trying to figure that out.”
Lucio said she told investigators she gave birth alone in her home sometime in September. She said she was unaware she was pregnant. Investigators were interviewing friends and acquaintances regarding the identity of the father.
He said a family member told the stepfather about finding the suitcase and he checked it out and found the baby.
Olmito is about 245 miles southeast of San Antonio.
