The Sam Houston Association for the Education of Young Children will host a spring workshop on Saturday, April 17.
The workshop, which will consist of early literacy and math skills programs, is the last of four workshops put on by the SHAEYC each year, said Dr. Diana Nabors, assistant professor of early childhood education and the student adviser of the SHAEYC.
Annette Unten, a reading specialist from Conroe ISD, is the keynote speaker at the workshop and will be presenting “Shared Reading: Reaching All Children Through Shared Literature.”
Nabors said that the workshop will consist of attending Unten’s presentation and then choosing between two different individual breakout sessions. The sessions, which will teach math and literacy activities for young children, are being hosted by SHSU’s education students. The guest speakers for the sessions are Lolli Sheed, a speech pathologist for Conroe ISD, and Annette Agafon, math coordinator for Conroe ISD. In these sessions, the participants will be able to work hands-on with the coordinators and make teaching tools to be taken home and used in the classroom.
Nabors said that the expected turnout for the workshop is approximately 120 to 150 participants. She said the workshop is not strictly for SHSU students and is open to anyone interested. There have already been day-care representatives from the Huntsville and Houston area that have contacted Nabors to attend. She also said that parents would also benefit greatly from the presentations in the workshop. The workshop also will provide continuing education credits to the participants.
Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. the day of the workshop on the first floor of the Teacher Education Center. There will be a brief meeting of the SHAEYC and an election of officers for next year. The workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to noon. The cost to the community will be $25, and SHSU students will receive the reduced rate of $10. For more information, contact Nabors at 936.294.3950.
