The Lady Kats opened the weekend event with a tough 5-3 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Despite first place finishes in both singles and doubles against Corpus Christi, SHSU could not pull out the team victory.Ivette Andrade had Corpus Christi’s Jessica Martinez down early and claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory for first place. “Ivette started out quickly and got her opponent down from the start,” said coach Michael Hunt.Bearkat Veronica Castillo followed Andrade with a 6-3, 7-5 win over the Inlanders’ Kelli Kukk for a fourth place finish.Andrade teamed up with Diala Ammar against Corpus Christi’s Martinez and Felice Sanchez for a 8-6 victory.”They looked really sharp against Corpus Christi,” Hunt said.A 7-0 team loss to Abilene Christian dropped the Bearkats to 1-2 for the weekend.ACU’s Lacy Johnson defeated Andrade 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 to claim first place in singles play for her team.Andrade and Ammar got a little roughed up in the doubles match against Johnson and Kristin Chumley, according to Hunt.”They didn’t serve or return well,” Hunt said. “And in tennis, that’s about two thirds of the game.”A Howard Payne forfeit gave SHSU its only team victory of the tournament.Howard Payne fielded only three players, but the teams played exhibition matches.The Bearkats will attempt to put another match in the win column Thursday when they travel to Shreveport, La. SHSU will compete against Centenary at 2 p.m.
