Zack Wheeler exits game against Dodgers early with lower back injury - NBC Sports Philadelphia

Philadelphia slugger Zack Wheeler, who was working a no-hitter with two outs in the fifth inning against the Dodgers on Tuesday night, did not start the sixth inning.

The team announced that the player left the match due to an injury to his lower left back.

The first sign of trouble came when Dodgers third baseman Cavan Biggio fired a solo home run to right and center. He followed up with passes to designated hitter Shohei Otani and catcher Will Smith — the only two balls he played in the game — before first baseman Freddie Freeman got out of the inning, ending the run.

Obviously, losing Wheeler for any length of time would be a big loss, especially for a team that already has veterans Taejuan Walker and Spencer Turnbull on the injured list.

Philadelphia has been fortunate this year that injuries to first baseman Bryce Harper, designated hitter Kyler Schwarber, center fielder Brandon Marsh, third baseman Alec Bohm and Suarez have proven to be less serious than initially feared.

Only time will tell if they survived another bullet.
