YouTube channel makes a foldable iPhone X with a foldable Motorola razr – Tablets and Phones – Geeks

All major smartphone makers now have foldable smartphones, with the exception of Apple. The Chinese YouTube channel thought this had to change, thus making the foldable iPhone itself. For this ‘iPhone V’ they used iPhone X and Motorola razr.

The iPhone V from YouTube Technological Aesthetics uses most of the iPhone X and the folding mechanism of the old Motorola foldable razr. Although the team actually wanted to use the mechanics of the Galaxy Z Flip first. The channel bought two of these Samsung devices, but when disassembling it, it was found that the screen bends badly when folded. The iPhone X screen is not designed for this purpose, so it will not work.

However, the screen halves of the Razr are less close to each other when folded, so the bending when folded is less. Technological aesthetics concluded that the mechanics of this phone would be good enough for an iPhone screen.

By the way, getting that iPhone screen was also a big problem. In order to make the screen foldable, the separate screen layers had to be peeled off the top glass layer and the underlying 3D touch layer. Dozens of attempts failed and YouTubers were only able to get their iPhone X foldable screen to work after 36 disabled screens.

With a working mechanism and a bendable screen, the technological aesthetics can work with additional internal devices. After all, Apple did not develop and position the motherboard and battery with the idea that they could be bent, so this design also had to be adapted. In the end, the YouTube channel decided to reverse the layout and place the main panel components in the lower half of the screen. Later, new cables, a new frame and a new housing had to be made, with, of course, the Apple logo on the back.

After more than a year of work and many broken iPhones, the iPhone V was ready. While the YouTubers in the video are proud of their product, they also acknowledge that it is still a 0.1 release. For example, they had to remove the speaker and remove the wireless charging to make everything fit. In addition, the original battery did not fit and a 1000 mAh battery had to be replaced. That’s less than half the capacity of the original battery, with all the ensuing consequences.

However, the biggest problem remains the foldable screen; After a few days of folding, the first damage began to appear. Techno-aesthetics say they plan to improve the device further, without sharing what they plan to do.
