What if Ukraine wins?
The Kalush Orchestra believes that if there is a win, the festival should be in Ukraine next year, preferably in Kyiv. And this is also the tradition, the winning country can organize the festival a year later. But is this also possible in a country currently at war?
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), the organization behind the song contest, says it has no plan B. However, producer of the Eurovision Song Contest in Rotterdam, member of the European Broadcasting Union Sietse Bakker, expects a quick decision when the point of no return He: “At what point can you still decide whether this is possible in Kyiv or not?”
If, according to Bakker, the festival could not be held in Ukraine, then there are enough scenarios. “For example, a country that recently organized the festival can switch quickly.” He also thinks of Poland, because this country recently organized a small song contest and did a good job. “The third option is for one of the five major countries to regulate it.”
A non-winner has already organized the Eurovision Song Contest before. In 1980, the event was in The Hague, while the previous year Israel won. Israel abandoned the organization because it had already won the previous year. The country ended up not participating in 1980, because the event was held on Holocaust Remembrance Day.
