World of Warcraft dragonflight
Overall, Blizzard has managed to put a good mix of new features, familiar old features, and significantly more freedom into the game with Dragonflight. The new Evoker class, with the ability to fly almost instantly on new islands and a regenerative flight style, provides much-needed challenges. It’s great if your other characters also benefit from what you unlock with your boss. This way you can fly right away with your replacements and not have to grind everything over and over again. The whole thing is so well put together that this could be the best expansion since Wrath of the Lich King.
World of Warcraft has been online for eighteen years now, but it is still very popular. The latest expansion, Dragonflight, is all about dragons and flight. With this, Blizzard hopes to attract both current players and veterans. Apart from the new regions, the expansion also includes a new heroClass and new skills, including flying on amazingly refurbished dragons. Does this provide enough challenge and fun to return to the world of Warcraft?
Millions of players
Despite the age of the game, it is still played by millions. It will have an estimated 5 million to 8 million subscribers worldwide by 2022, of which 700,000 to approximately 1.7 million are active every day. A few weeks ago the ninth (!) Expansion was released: Dragonflight. As the name suggests, this edition is about dragons and flying.

An important part of the current players comes from China, estimated at 3 million, and it is questionable whether the game will still be available there in 2023, because Blizzard has not yet been able to renew the 2008 agreement with the Chinese Netease. Blizzard is now negotiating with other parties. Official numbers of players have not been known since Blizzard stopped disclosing them in 2015. They could be higher, because there are also players who mainly play WoW Classic.
So World of Warcraft has been around since 2004. This is an eternity in game land and there are few games that are still so popular after such a long time. The popularity is now relatively high, because the heyday of WoW seems to be behind us. Between 2007 and 2011, between 10 million and 13 million players were active. Especially after Warlords of Draenor, since 2014 the number of players has dropped dramatically. At the same time, competing game developers would be jealous of the millions of players still active.
Thus, the challenge for Blizzard is to retain the current core of regular subscribers with constant improvements and new content, and a new big expansion about once every two years. A new story is on the horizon, but above all a new country to discover, including a new country Element and/or class. And of course, unique new features or fun game modes to try out.
Many old-timers catch a glimpse when a new expansion appears, but a good portion of them disappear again after the so-called honeymoon phase, during which all the novelties have been experienced. Often something completely new is introduced, which then disappears in the subsequent expansion.
