The United States reopened four border crossings with Mexico on Thursday as the number of illegal immigrants declined. In addition, according to US officials, there are more personnel available.
This concerns border crossings in Texas, Arizona and California. The US Border Patrol closed it last December, while workers struggled to deal with the influx of illegal immigrants. Sometimes there were nearly eleven thousand a day.
Last week, there were still 6,400 illegal immigrants per day. This is a significant decline compared to pre-Christmas levels.
US Customs saw nearly 2.5 million migrants at the southern border in 2023. That’s a record.
Mexican and US officials pledged last week to work more closely to address migration at their shared border. This decision came after a meeting between senior US officials and Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. Since then, border controls on the Mexican side have been tightened.
In the US Congress, Republicans in particular continue to push for stricter border security measures. They even linked the implementation of such measures to the approval of foreign aid. This means: no weapons for Ukraine as long as border security is not tightened.
