The National Alliance of the Social Democratic Party once again became the largest in the parliamentary elections in Sint Maarten. According to the provisional distribution of seats, Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs’ party will win four seats out of fifteen. But the current coalition will lose its majority.
The National Alliance loses two seats compared to the previous elections. In 2020, the party achieved six more goals. The populist United People’s Party has dropped from four seats in 2020 to three seats now.
With this result, the current coalition consisting of the National Alliance and the Popular Union loses its majority in Parliament. To form a new government, the three parties will have to work together.
Four other parties (now the PFP, URSM and the Democratic Party) will get two seats.
Participation in the elections was significantly high this year. More than 65% of the population voted. In 2020, the percentage was 59 percent. A total of 14,678 out of 22,553 voters voted.
Polling stations closed their doors at eight o’clock in the evening (local time) on Thursday. According to the head of the polling station, the counting of votes took longer than expected, but everything went without any incident.
