Environmental groups have said this in a statement. They are calling on US states to ban new measures to mine digital currencies so as not to cause further damage to the climate.

Mining bitcoins through computers consumes a lot of energy due to the complex calculations required. According to environmental groups, Bitcoin production in the United States will result in 27.4 million tons of CO2 emissions between 2021 and mid-2022. That’s more than three times the emissions of the largest coal-fired power plant in the United States and nearly equal to the annual emissions of six million cars.

According to a recent White House study, 38 percent of global Bitcoin mining now takes place in the United States. It was just 3.5 percent in 2020. Due to China’s strict restrictions on Bitcoin mining, many Bitcoin companies have moved to the US or are expanding their US operations.

An advocacy group for Bitcoin miners in the US says the crypto industry uses relatively little energy, with more than half of that energy coming from renewable sources.
