The value of insured damages as a result of the recent earthquake in Japan could reach €5.85 billion. This is according to estimates by the US agency Karen Clark & Company (KCC), an agency specializing in numbers and estimates surrounding this type of disaster.
According to the company, damage to homes represents more than two-thirds of the total. Many buildings with other functions, such as factories and shopping malls, were constructed to be more resistant to earthquakes in affected cities. These buildings are often of steel construction, making them less likely to collapse.
Monday’s earthquake reached a magnitude of 7.6 and was followed by several aftershocks. In several cities on the west coast, many homes collapsed or were destroyed by fire. The full extent of the destruction has not yet been determined.
According to the latest reports, the death toll is close to 100. There are also many missing and wounded. The mission of thousands of rescuers is complicated by aftershocks, landslides and damaged roads. They have not yet been able to reach hundreds of people in the hardest-hit Ishikawa Prefecture.
