Former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas has been transferred from prison to hospital, days after his controversial arrest. Police arrested him on Friday at the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador, where he had been staying since December. The raid sparked angry reactions at the international level.
The prison authority (SNAI) said Glass was taken to the military hospital in Guayaquil at noon. The prison authority said that Glass was in stable condition.
A statement issued by SNAI said the man became ill after refusing to eat food served to him by the prison for the past 24 hours. According to Ecuadorian media, Glass may have taken an overdose of medication. He was reportedly found unconscious in his cell.
A few hours ago, his lawyers raised the alarm because they were unable to reach him. Attorney Sonia Vera says Glass was thrown to the ground and punched several times during the police raid. She has not yet been allowed to visit her client and believes he is in danger.
Other Latin American countries reacted angrily this weekend to Glass’ arrest. They condemned the raid and described it as a “flagrant violation of international law.” In response, Mexico severed diplomatic relations with Ecuador.
Under international law, diplomats and people representing their countries abroad enjoy immunity. The host state may not prosecute or arrest persons in the embassy.
Current President Noboa defends the raid on the Mexican Embassy and points out that Glass still has to serve time for corruption. Glass has been convicted of this twice and has already served time. In the second arrest warrant, he requested asylum in Mexico, which he obtained. He has always described his conviction as politically motivated.
