According to the think tank, China is leading the development of batteries, hypersonics and radio frequency communications such as 5G and 6G. The US still leads in seven scientific fields, including vaccines, quantum computers and rocket launch systems.

Australian researchers looked at “high-impact” research in important and emerging technologies that were published in top scientific journals and frequently cited by other scientists.

“The Critical technology tracker “For some technologies, it shows that the world’s top ten research institutions are all located in China, and typically publish nine times more influential research than the second-placed United States,” it continues.
