The Mitsubishi Mirage, sold in the Netherlands under the Space Star name, has been the least safe car in the US in recent years. On average, the highest number of deaths are among drivers of these cars, according to government data.
Mitsubishi Space Star costs 16,490 euros in the Netherlands, making it the cheapest car in our country. The Space Star is slightly ahead of the Hyundai i10, which is 100 euros more expensive. In the US, the car costs the same. This model is priced at $17,650 and is one of the most affordable new cars available. However, the question here is whether cheap is expensive, because 205 drivers in the United States have died in accidents in the sedan version of this car in recent years.
2nd place is Dodge Challenger
This is the highest number of deaths per million vehicle years recorded between 2018 and 2021. Second is the Mirage hatchback with 183 deaths, which really only has a different rear. This is according to new data Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The Dodge Challenger 2WD ranks third with 154 fatalities, followed by the Hyundai Accent and Chevrolet Spark with 152 and 151 fatalities respectively. The Ford Mustang, Chevy Camaro, Dodge Challenger and Dodge Charger all round out the top 10.
It is a very dangerous car for others
The company tracks the deaths of all cars involved in collisions. So, if an accident causes more fatalities than the driver driving the car involved, the list will show that as well. For example, it can indicate which cars cause the most deaths among drivers in other cars in the event of an accident. The most ‘deadly car’ in this case was the Ram 3500 Crew Cab 4WD, which claimed 189 lives. Second is the aforementioned Dodge Challenger 2WD. Of the ten cars that can kill another driver in a crash, six are full-size pickups.
There were no casualties in these cars
The safest cars on the road based on low passenger fatality rates are mainly large and expensive cars like the BMW X3, Lexus ES350, Mercedes’ E-Class sedan and Nissan Pathfinder. They all recorded zero fatalities over a million registered vehicle years. The E-Class and Lexus ES350 are the only sedans topping the list, while the other vehicles are high-end SUVs and crossovers.
Although the Mitsubishi Mirage — like the European Space Star — is built in Thailand, the American version may meet different safety requirements than the one coming to Europe. There are still plenty of very large SUVs, trucks, and pickups driving around in America, so you’ll be missing out on the little Mitsubishi. Mitsubishi America reacted with surprise to the IIHC’s conclusions. “The Mitsubishi Mirage and Mirage G4 meet or exceed every federal crash test,” a spokesperson told TheDrive.
