A Russian TV journalist who protested the war in Ukraine during a live news broadcast on Russian state TV in March was briefly detained again. Her lawyer reported this on Telegram. The reason for the arrest appears to be a new protest last Friday.
On Friday, Marina Ovsianikova posted pictures of herself on Telegram in which she protested in front of the Kremlin, holding a sign that read: “Putin is a killer.” It was followed by photos on Sunday showing her being put into a minibus by police officers.
“There is no information about her whereabouts,” her lawyer later wrote on Telegram. But seven hours later, the journalist published a message that she had been released. “I’m home now and everything is fine,” she wrote.
Ovsyannikova was admired around the world in March for interrupting a news broadcast from Russia’s main state broadcaster by walking into the studio yelling “Stop the war.” “Don’t believe the propaganda, they’re lying to you” I read a protest banner that she could display behind the announcer for a few seconds.
Through her work, she wanted to show the world that “the Russians are against war.” At the same time, she wanted to make it clear to her citizens that they should “think critically and critically about the analysis of the information presented to them.”
After her protest, Ovsyannikova was imprisoned and interrogated for 14 hours. She was fined 30 thousand rubles (about 260 euros) and then released. She was sentenced to 15 years in prison for spreading “false information”.
After a few days, she quit the state radio she worked for. France offered her political asylum, but she refused. She wanted to stay in Russia.
