Ryzen 7000 on the doorstep: Are Ryzen 5000 CPUs cheaper yet?

A new generation of hardware on the doorstep usually means a significant reduction in prices from the current assortment. At least, that’s how things used to be, in a time before crises and shortages. However, the CPU market has been looking stable for a while, and with the Ryzen 7000 revealed next week, we wondered: How are Ryzen 5000 CPU prices going?

Starting with the “original” Ryzen 5000 range as of November 2020. The Ryzen 5 5600X was originally sold here for $319, and as of February of this year it was still around $300. Since March, the price has fallen significantly, to 230 euros now, about 28 percent less than it was at the time of release.

The price of the Ryzen 7 5800X has dropped by roughly the same amount. At 350 euros, it is 27 percent cheaper than it was in 2020. The price of the Ryzen 9 5900X is down 24 percent, to 440 euros. This has happened especially in the last few months; In February it was still sold for 550 euros. We see the biggest price drop with the Ryzen 9 5950X: with 600 euros it’s 33% cheaper.

In April of this year, AMD refreshed the series with the long-awaited Ryzen 5 5600 ‘non-X’, the cheaper 5500, the Ryzen 7 5700X and of course the first stacked CPU: the 5800X3D. Most of these products haven’t gone down in price yet, which of course isn’t surprising. An exception is the Ryzen 5 5500. It sold for around 175 euros in April, you can now get it for 135 euros. So it’s 22 percent cheaper, in less than five months.

Ryzen 7000s will be announced in a week. September 27 is the currently expected delivery date. It is likely that the prices of the 5000 series will drop further in the coming period.

If you’re thinking: I’m using a “cheap” Ryzen 5000 CPU for my new PC, keep in mind that we’re now switching to an AM5 socket. So you can’t upgrade to the latest Ryzens versions later using the same motherboard.
