Alexei Navalny missed another hearing on Monday. The Russian opposition leader disappeared two weeks ago. Supporters are concerned about President Vladimir Putin’s most famous opponent.
Navalny is serving a years in prison. He was sentenced for this, among other things, for fraud. Outside Russia, the Kremlin is believed to have marginalized its biggest critics through a show trial.
In recent years, Navalny has been detained in a high-security penal colony in the Vladimir region. From there, his voice was regularly heard on social media through his team. He also attended the new hearings via video connection. This did not happen on Monday for the second time in a row.
Russian prison authorities initially said Navalny could not appear due to a power outage. It was later reported that he was no longer in the prison in question. Then the judge adjourned the session.
Navalny’s associates reported last week that he had been transferred to an unknown location in early December. They have not had any contact since then. The fact that Navalny’s health has deteriorated recently adds to the concerns.
The Kremlin said it had “no information” about Navalny’s whereabouts now.
