Russia plans to continue cooperation on the International Space Station until 2028. This is four years longer than Moscow previously said.

Russia cooperates on the International Space Station with the US space agency NASA. But recently, tensions have been rising between Russia and the United States due to the war in Ukraine. So Russia announced earlier this year that it would end cooperation after 2024.

Sergei Krikalev, head of manned space missions at the Russian space agency Roscosmos, said earlier that he would reconsider the decision. Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Industry Minister Denis Manturov has now said he wants to use the International Space Station until 2028.

According to him, the extension will ensure that Russia can ensure the continuity of its manned space program. Only in this way can technical and industrial expertise be preserved and expanded, says Manturov.

The fact that Russia will stay longer on the International Space Station has something to do with its space station. This terminal is currently under construction, but it is not ready yet. According to sources, the first parts of the space station could be launched in 2028.
