Shortly before the start of the Berlin Marathon, police removed climate protesters who wanted to sit on the road. This happened at the starting point of the marathon route at the Brandenburg Gate.
Police said that the demonstrators broke through the barriers and that eight activists were able to reach the road surface. They were caught before they could stick to the asphalt or otherwise block the road. The marathon started without any problems.
The Gruppe Letzte Generation has announced its desire to disrupt the marathon in climate protest. The group has been blocking roads in the German capital for some time.
The mayor of Berlin called on the demonstrators not to disrupt the marathon. “I don’t even want to think about it: any act of vandalism could prevent a world marathon record,” Mayor Kai Wegener said on Saturday. Last year, Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge set a world record in Berlin and on Sunday won the marathon for the fifth time. It was not possible to achieve a world record this year.
This year, 48,000 people will participate in the Berlin Marathon. According to the mayor, a disruption by the climate group would “irritate many city residents.”
According to the Climate Group, the end times are near
A week ago, members of the group smeared the Brandenburg Gate with orange paint. According to the municipality, the cost of cleaning will reach at least 35 thousand euros.
Letzte Generation says that the end of the world is near for people due to climate change and speaks of an emergency. According to the group, Germany should stop using fossil fuels in no more than seven years. The German government also wants to get rid of this type of fuel, but only in more than seven years.
