Omigron is spreading fast in the United States: According to figures from the National Health Commission CDC, 73 percent of new infections last week were caused by a new variant. Twenty days after the first omigran infection was detected in the United States, it has now become the dominant type in the country. In one week, the number of infections registered with omikron nearly sixfold.

In some areas, the percentage of omigran infections is higher than the national average. For example, the CDC estimates that more than 90 percent of new infections in New York are caused by new variants.

President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced new measures to slow the rapidly rising corona infections.
