Secretary of State Van der Burg (Justice) will travel to Tubbergen on Tuesday, the municipality where the asylum seekers’ center will be located in a former hotel. The council announced tonight.

During the General Council meeting, van der Burg will explain the Cabinet’s decision to grant permission to a center for asylum seekers in Albergen, part of Tubbergen.

Residents can also participate in the meeting if they register in advance with the municipality. The unrest erupted in Tübergen after the announcement on Tuesday that the Cabinet had given permission to take 150 to 300 asylum seekers at the former hotel. This is the first time that the Council of Ministers has taken a decision to issue a permit for a center for asylum seekers without the approval of the local government.

Previously, the conversation with the municipality yielded nothing

Since the problems at reception are acute and lengthy consultations with the municipality have come to nothing, the Council of Ministers has decided to accommodate asylum seekers in the municipality without Tubbergen’s consent. According to the foreign minister, it was “the choice between a headache and a stomachache.”

The concerned residents wanted to stop the arrival by purchasing the hotel, but this was already clear from the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers Sold. The first people are expected to move into the building in mid-September.
