IAEA concerned about cooling water at Ukraine's nuclear power plant after dam breach | The war in Ukraine

The International Atomic Energy Agency wants to monitor water levels in the reservoir that supplies cooling water to the mothballed reactors at the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant in southern Ukraine. This was reported by the Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi. The recent destruction of the Kachovka Dam has caused a sharp drop in the water level in that reservoir.

According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, there are significant differences in reported data on reservoir water levels. This is why the agency wants to provide clarity right away.

If the water level drops too low, cooling water can no longer be pumped into closed reactors and nuclear tailings. The power plant can then still count on cooling ponds that hold enough water for several months.

However, due to the war in Ukraine, experts do not trust this middle ground and are worried about security.

Grossi, who is traveling to Kiev and the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant next week, stressed that the IAEA needs access to the power plant’s electrical installations. He also wants to send additional monitors to the Russian-controlled nuclear power plant.
