Homey Pro gets support for Thread. This is done via over-the-air updating. This is an experimental feature that allows the hub to be used as a thread router. The Pro and Homey Bridge also have the function of controlling air conditioners via infrared.
Homey’s parent company, Athom, will release an over-the-air update for Homey Pro (early 2023) on Monday afternoon Dutch time. This turns the device into a Thread router. For example, it can control smart home devices powered by Matter. Homey Pro was announced at the end of 2022 and became widely available in the summer of last year. The device already had a Thread router when it was introduced, but it wasn’t usable yet.
The update allows users to use Homey Pro as a thread base station and border router.
Previously it was possible to control Matter devices via WiFi or Ethernet using the Homey Pro. This was already possible for devices with Thread, but only with a third-party border router, like Apple’s HomePod or Google’s Nest Hub 2. This is an experimental feature at the moment, Athom says. The function will be available for devices running version 10.3 or higher.
Tweakers already wrote a review about the Homey Pro last year (early 2023).
Athom is also releasing an update for the Homey Pro and Homey Bridge that allows the built-in infrared sensor to be used to control air conditioning units. Unlike Thread Radio support, the infrared function works on all Homey devices, including older ones. This is also an experimental function. According to Atom, there is support for “devices from several popular brands such as Mitsubishi and LG.” More brands should follow later.
