Last weekend there was no Formula 1 for a while, but this week there is another special race weekend on the program on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Canadian Grand Prix will take place on Sunday, June 18, in a period that sees many European races.
Canada is a popular destination for many fans and the drivers themselves. Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is located on an artificial island a stone’s throw from Montreal, so a trip to the circuit can easily be combined with a visit to the local restaurant industry. The high-speed course takes drivers over 4.361 kilometers of asphalt and has a total number of corners of 14. Immediately after Turn 14 is the ‘Wall of Champions’, an infamous section of the circuit where many of the sport’s greats have seen their races finish early. The Grand Prix is 70 laps long. The latest edition dates back to 2022 and was won by Max Verstappen.
Forest fires in Canada
The race appears to be on hold this year. Canada is currently experiencing massive wildfires, which reached their peak last week. This is nothing new for the North American country at this point in the year, but the fire will be spreading 12 times faster than usual. As a result, the province of Quebec and neighboring regions have their hands full trying to bring the wildfires under control. Much less important: But Formula 1 confirmed last Thursday that the race weekend could go ahead, because bushfires are 800km from the circuit. Montreal’s air quality is also said to be improving.
Canadian Grand Prix weekend schedule
In principle, the race weekend in Canada will start with the first free practice session on Friday, June 16th at 7:30pm NST. The second training session of the day begins at 11:00 pm. Saturday, June 17th starts at 6:30pm with the third and final free practice, after which it’s time to determine the starting grid by qualifying at 10:00pm. The Canadian Grand Prix will be held on Sunday, June 18th at 8:00 pm. These unusual times are the result of the time difference with Montreal, coming in six hours ahead of the Netherlands.
