Five people were killed in a Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian port city of Odessa. The Ukrainian Navy informed Reuters news agency about this. Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis and Ukrainian President Zelensky watched the attack from a distance. The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed the attack, saying that drones in the port area were targeted.
Mitsotakis visited Ukraine for the first time since the Russian invasion in February 2022. As a member of the European Union, Greece supports the country. The Greeks also promised to provide military support to Zelensky.
The Greek Prime Minister toured the port of Odessa. They also visited the remains of a building targeted by a Russian drone strike on Saturday, killing twelve people.
500 meters away
As they were returning to the car, an explosion occurred and sirens were heard. Zelensky and Mitsotakis were about 500 meters from the site of the attack. “We not only heard about today’s attack, we also saw it,” Zelensky later said at a press conference. “This is concrete evidence for us that there is indeed a war going on here,” Mitsotakis continued.
The ports are regularly subjected to Russian attacks. More than 880 drone strikes and 170 missiles have been launched on Black Sea port areas, including Odessa, since July, according to one commander.
Mitsotakis once again promised to support Zelensky during his visit. According to the Ukrainian president, the visit discussed “the means that we can deploy to ensure the security of the Black Sea region and its residents.”
