There are 2,572 people aged 100 or older living in the Netherlands. Compared to other European countries, there are relatively few. The province of Zeeland is home to the highest number of people over the age of 100. This is evidenced by figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
In Zealand, there are 4.2 people aged 100 or over per 1,000 people over 80, followed by Friesland with 4 people over 100 per 1,000 people over 80. The lowest numbers of centenarians live in Limburg (2.2 per thousand people over 80 years old) and North Brabant (2.4 per thousand people over 80 years old).
In recent decades, CBS has noted that the number of people over 100 is increasing every year. This model is expected to continue. “This is because, compared to previous generations, more children are being born and older people are living longer,” CBS said. The statistics agency predicts that by 2040 there will be more than five thousand people aged 100 or over. They now number 2,572, and the vast majority of them are women: 2,172.
Across the Netherlands, there are three people aged 100 or over for every 1,000 people over 80. And that’s relatively few: “Netherlands comes in at the bottom of the middle bracket,” says CBS. Relatively speaking, Ireland has the largest number of people over 100: 15.4 people over 100 per 1,000 people over 80. Hungary, France and Greece also received high scores. Latvia, Czech Republic, Romania, Croatia and Bulgaria have the lowest number of people (more than 100 per thousand people over 80 years of age). In the latter country, there is not even one person over 100 for every thousand people over 80 years of age.
