Charles III was crowned King of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on Saturday. The 74-year-old Charles took the British crown on his head under the eyes of 2,200 audience members and millions of television viewers.

Charles has been king since the death of his mother, Elizabeth II, on September 8. He was officially declared king on 10 September. Today he has already got the crown on his head.

His wife, Camilla, was also crowned. She can now officially call herself Queen. Before that she had the title of Queen Consort. Thus, a distinction was made between her and the late Queen Elizabeth.

The coronation ceremony in Westminster Abbey began at noon and lasted just under two hours. Charles and Camilla left Buckingham Palace at 11:20 am, following a route through central London. Along this path there were many ardent fans, but also opponents of the monarchy.

74-year-old Charles is the monarch of the United Kingdom, which consists of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The first three countries together make up Great Britain. As a British monarch, he is also the head of state of Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, among others.
