A satellite prototype was launched from Caltech Research in January It was launchedFor the first time, energy was transmitted from space to Earth. The technology could be widely used in the future.
Why is this important? Many countries want to move away from fossil fuels in the coming decades. But it is not immediately clear where they will get their energy from next. In addition to existing renewable sources, experiments are being conducted with more exotic ways of generating electricity.
In the news: The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has shown through the Microwave Array Energy Transfer in Low Orbit Experiment (MAPLE) that it is possible to send space-generated solar energy to Earth’s surface.
- The technology was first tested in space itself. MAPLE is equipped with two receivers, about a foot away from the transmitter. The electricity transmitted wirelessly over that short distance was beamed even further
