coma
“My father contracted Covid-19 and suffered greatly from it immediately. He was 64 years old, fit and healthy, but the virus left him incredibly short of breath. After a day or two in the hospital, it became so serious that he had to be placed in an artificial coma in order to get the proper form of ventilation. This decision had to be made very quickly so that no one would be able to see it before he fell asleep. That morning, I texted him how things were going, but didn’t hear back. Maybe because he was too miserable to text, I know that now, but at the time I was worried.
So I sent two more question marks two hours later. He saw it, but he couldn’t do anything with it anymore. It was our last form of ‘communication’ and then he fell asleep. At first I was optimistic: the doctors told us we would have to wait and see, but a ventilator could really help him. However, these weeks have been terrible, due to many ups and downs. At one point his condition improved greatly and the sleeping medication was stopped, but an hour later his life was already hanging by a thread. This tension and rapid changes made it very intense.

Visit
“Fortunately, as a family we were allowed to visit him. We sat in turns at his bedside, and there was someone there every day. I was never able to get an answer to my last letter, but I have a feeling that I was in touch with him after that. Sometimes, when Things were going well and his sleep medication was getting lighter. The nurses reported seeing his vital signs change when I was with him or my mother or my sisters. I don’t think he really heard anything I said to him, but I think he felt someone was there with him. I think that This is a very nice idea.
Ultimately, he was in a coma for seven weeks and was almost completely on a ventilator. It became increasingly clear that his lungs would not be able to survive on their own if he woke up. In addition, my father contracted another flu virus, and his body could no longer cope with it. We had to decide to stop his treatment.
